Topic: Regenerative Engineering Education for Sustainability
When should engineers start thinking about sustainability? The reality of engineering practice is a focus on innovation, efficiency, costs and profitability. However, this focus may be one of the causes for the anthropogenic climate crisis we are currently facing. As professional engineers in Ontario, we take an oath to protect people and society but it seems we are falling short of this oath, leading to reactive measures for sustainability through climate change mitigation and adaptation. This talk proposes that we think ahead about proactive measures and regeneration for sustainability, through empowering engineering students to start thinking about people, society, sustainability from the onset of their education. The talk will also discuss a framework for sustainability in engineering education and showcase the results from a case study completed at the University of Toronto (https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2977-3504/adcf28)
